Field Visit to local farms to meet fellow Farmers !!

This is Mr.Ravi Kumar's newly erected polyhouse .. his second unit owing to increase in the demand he is starting up the new unit.  This  farm was  far away from hyderabad and it took me about an hour to reach from the city. It was somewhere near a place named Chevella . he is one of the member of the flower grower association here and has been in to this since 2 years i guess. He has about an acre or odd of Filler grass growing in open cultivation and he mentioned to me that it fetches him about 40rs per bunch of that grass. Regarding his gerberas he proudly mentions that he is able to get about 100 bundles of Gerberas with 10 each  from the  560 sq.mtr polyhouse. He mostly sells them to the flower shops directly and doesnt go to the commission agent regularly to sell his produce. He was very friendly and offered to help me in any regards ..look at all the pics i took @ his site ..

Bed preparation going on in the newly erected polyhouse

Though there was some problem with the plants last month due to inavailability of the labor.. the plants seems to do pretty well and the flowers produce was  fairly well !!

These reds were really brilliant looking among all and  according to him .. these are the most wanted ones!!

The person on the left is Ajay from KF BIOPLANTS.. who has taken me to the farm during his monthly visit to the farms . The man talking to him is Ravi Kumar garu.

Thats the grass used as fillers in the flower arrangements..easy to grow and good money too !!

Both old and new polyhouse with the grass in the front !!

Foundation poles erected !!

Finally there has been some more improvement in the work ad i got the time to upload some of the  pics of the work done.. after the pits that were dug 2* 2 ft .. these poles  which are  about 4ft long were inserted  two feet deep with cement concrete. The rest of the polyhouse will be erected on these inserts only .. i think the next phase of work will start in about a week from now.

Current status of the Green house

After visiting a few green houses in the near by areas.. i have  learnt that Sriroz is the best company to go with for the erection of the polyhouse.

Talked to Sriroz people and they  have sent me the needed quotations and  some details of the site.

Then the work started with the clearing of the land  which we got it done before the site engineer  was sent to my site to do the marking for the foundation lay out works.

after the site was almost cleared ... this is how it looked  !!

then the digging of pits  for foundation poles  began !!

Why Gerberas ??

Although i had couple of other choices like Roses and Carnation i choose to go with  Gerberas for my  First project into floriculture mainly because of reasons like:
  • Ease of cultivation and lesser expertise required
  • More profit per acre compartively
  • Stable market all round the year
  • Lesser price fluctuation
  • Personally .. i love gerberas
so the  first thing  that i had to do  was get a soil and water testing done at various lands that we owned so find a suitable location

Then i met up with the local horticulture officer to find out the process for applying for govt. subsidy that i might possible get. The govt.  currently  is only giving subsidy for the small farmers with size of  1000 sft.
Anyways  here is a  picture of the site location that i have  decided on.

Hello World !!

Hello everyone , i am starting this blog to share my experiences that i will start to learn from now . Though my family is into traditional farming, we are new to Floriculture and Green house farming. Oh by the way  i am a  doctor and  not really a farmer  :) ..   but  i am very interested in doing this.  My first project is  GERBERAS and i have just  started the  work  .. this picture depicts  what's in  my mind.

Anyways .. wish me  luck !!  i hope that i will bring in good results and  also  be of some help to people who are  interested in green house farming and floriculture .
